Types of Worms
1. Compost Worms
Composting worms (Eisenia fetida) are used to recycle food scraps and other garden materials. This process is called vermicomposting. Composting worms have big appetites and are constantly eating. They will eat their body weight every day, This produces worm casting which is powered gold for your gardens. These worms are perfect for raised garden beds, and compost heaps. They will improve and maintain good soil structure and act as a water saver. Compost worms are used for composting toilets while living off the grid.
2. Bait Worms
European nightcrawlers (Dendrobaena Hortensis) are generally blueish, pink, and green in color and have a striped appearance. They weigh approximately 1.5g when fully grown. Worms take 20 weeks to reach maturity and only lay one egg at a time, which contains one baby. They naturally live near river banks in soft soil and are more active at night. Bait worms have a habit of taking off during the night and need to be kept in an escape-proof bed. When used for fishing, they can be expensive due to the time taken to reproduce. However when fishing in salt or fresh water, the fish are going to love you for their tasty treat.
3. Worm Castings
Vermicompost is a technical term for worm castings or worm poo. Organic matter such as food scraps, garden waste, or paper/cardboard moves through the digestive tract and then is excreted as worm castings. Worms will eat half their body weight every day, which produces powder gold for your gardens.
